Information & Referral Specialist (Part-time), Opportunity Center (Fond du Lac)

ADVOCAP, Inc., is an established, recognized leader with over 50 years of experience in delivering effective anti-poverty and self-sufficiency programs and services. We are a private, nonprofit Community Action Agency committed to our mission of “creating opportunities for people and communities to reduce poverty and increase self-sufficiency.”

ADVOCAP is seeking a highly motivated individual who wants to have a positive impact on the lives of people who are struggling with poverty, homelessness, and other barriers to self-sufficiency. This position will have an essential role in ADVOCAP’s Opportunity Center in Fond du Lac. After individuals become familiar with how the Center operates and its resources, they are connected to the Information & Referral (I&R) Specialist.

The I&R Specialist conducts and documents a cursory needs assessment to determine immediate needs and how ADVOCAP and other community resources can address those needs. Individuals are then connected to resources, with follow-up, to ensure access and results. After immediate needs are addressed and they are more stabilized, individuals become engaged with the Opportunity Center Supervisor for longer-term self-sufficiency planning and case management services.

Responsibilities include:
  • Work as a team member with the Center Assistant to handle unscheduled individuals who enter the Center.
  • Meet with individuals to assess individual needs, reach an agreement on a course of action, and connect individuals with resources.
  • Advocate for individuals to obtain needed services and identify service gaps.
  • Document client needs and services provided in ADVOCAP’s database.
  • Celebrate client successes.
Job requirements:
  • Must have a bachelor’s degree in the human services field, and/or experience in a human services position.
  • Knowledge of general community resources; awareness of the causes and conditions of poverty; and demonstrated ability to advocate for individuals, while maintaining strong connections in the community.
  • Ability to treat clients and staff with dignity and respect, and consistent with ADVOCAP’s Corporate Values.
  • Knowledge and understanding of needs pertaining to those who are homeless, living in poverty, and/or experiencing crises.
  • Ability to develop as an informed and respected resource for those in need.
  • Skills in interviewing, assessing needs and barriers, planning reachable steps to remediate crises, and developing and maintaining partner relationships.
  • Demonstrated reliable attendance and professional work ethic.
  • Acceptable drug screen and comprehensive background check required.
Salary & benefits:

This part-time position will work 28 hours per week with core hours consistent with the Center’s hours of operation. The entry/starting wage for this position is $20.00 per hour, negotiable based on experience. This position will have access to vacation, sick and holiday pay, and our employer contribution 401k.
