When Seth first connected with ADVOCAP, life felt like it was unraveling faster than he could keep up. He was working as a janitor and staying with his mom after losing his own place to live. When his car broke down, keeping a vehicle meant sacrificing rent, and he chose to fix his car so he could get to work and stay employed. Although his mom opened her door for him to stay, stability still felt far away. He slept on the floor, and when his daughter visited, she slept on the couch. Every day felt like survival mode.
Connecting with ADVOCAP
A coworker who was participating in an ADVOCAP program shared their experience and suggested Seth connect as well. That conversation became a turning point. When Seth reached out, ADVOCAP connected him with the Work N Wheels program and a financial advisor. He met regularly with staff, learning how to budget and rebuild control over his finances. Through Work N Wheels, he was able to purchase a reliable vehicle, giving him dependable transportation to get to work. With no interest and manageable monthly payments, the program helped him stay employed, regain independence, and rebuild confidence. He took pride in caring for his car, making every payment on time, and even paying it off early.
Access to reliable transportation and increased financial literacy brought stability, opening the door to even bigger opportunities. Seth received a TBRA voucher and moved into the Tiny Homes Village. Having a place of his own changed everything. For the first time in a long time, he had a bed that was truly his. This stability gave him the foundation he needed to focus on goals he had once set aside, and Seth began to invest in himself and his future.
Building a future
Seth earned certifications as a personal trainer and nutritionist, something he says he never would have risked spending his money on before. What once felt like a distant dream became a real step toward a future he could finally imagine.
Even with all these personal successes, Seth is most proud of establishing a foundation for his and his daughter’s future. He is now able to be present in ways he hadn’t been able to before — tucking her in at night, waking her up in the morning, driving her to appointments, and simply being there. Where life once felt like a constant struggle, he now feels proud to be, in his words, “the dad she deserves.”
Seth also built strong relationships with people at ADVOCAP who recognized his hard work and believed in him. Looking back, he realizes how close he had come to losing everything, and how important it was to have someone work with him while he rebuilt.
Giving back and moving forward
Today, Seth sees his life through a different lens. He gives back by helping out at the Tiny Homes Village and is growing his personal training and nutrition coaching services. At his job, he’s been encouraged by the possibility of becoming general manager someday.
He’s still paying down debt, month by month, and staying focused on his goals. His biggest goal is to give his daughter something he never had: a stable future she doesn’t have to fight so hard to achieve. He also hopes to one day give back in other ways, possibly becoming a minister and sharing how faith helped carry him through his hardest times.
When Seth thinks about where he might be without ADVOCAP, he doesn’t spend much time on the ‘what-ifs,’ but he recognizes how much support mattered along the way. Without the opportunities available through ADVOCAP programs, he might still be struggling just to get by, possibly facing homelessness. Instead, he is more than two years into building a life grounded in stability and purpose.
Now, as a member of ADVOCAP’s Board of Directors, Seth’s journey has come full circle. He brings lived experience to the table, showing that when people have access to the right resources, support, and determination, positive things can happen.
Seth’s advice to those who are unsure about reaching out for help is: change is possible. ADVOCAP will meet you halfway, provide you with the tools, and show you how to use them, but you have to be willing to put in the work. If you do, your life can start turning around, just like his did.
Thank you to Seth for sharing his story with us. His journey is one of many examples of how, with the right opportunities and resources, families can work toward stability and rebuild their futures.
