With heating season beginning on October 1, the Wisconsin Home Energy Assistance Program (WHEAP) is now accepting applications through May 15, 2027. WHEAP assists eligible households with their heating and electric bills.

According to the Wisconsin Department of Administration, an estimated 170,000 households across the state are expected to receive energy assistance this season. The average benefit is projected to be $441 for heating costs and $257 for electric costs. These benefits can help eligible households manage energy expenses and reduce the financial strain of keeping homes comfortable during the colder months.

Eligibility is based on household size, gross household income, and energy costs. Households with a gross income at or below 60% of the state median income may qualify for assistance. See the 2026–2027 WHEAP income guidelines below to learn whether your household may be eligible.
