ADVOCAP Head Start Receives Grant for Rural Literacy Support

updated July 21, 2025

ADVOCAP is pleased to announce a $30,000 grant from the Otto Bremer Trust Community Responsive Fund within the Oshkosh Area Community Foundation, to enhance early literacy efforts in our Markesan and Ripon Head Start classrooms.

Literacy enrichment and school readiness

This funding supports a comprehensive, evidence-based approach to building foundational literacy skills in young children. From interactive read-alouds and writing activities to phonological awareness games, children in our Head Start program engage in daily literacy experiences that support school success.

Literacy-rich environments and daily activities

Each classroom includes a variety of age-appropriate books, visual supports, and materials for storytelling and writing. Children participate in shared reading multiple times each day, helping them expand vocabulary, recognize letters, and develop an early love of reading.

Family engagement in literacy

Families are essential partners in helping children develop literacy skills. Through the Book Buddies initiative, children borrow books each week to read at home, and families are encouraged to sign up for library cards and attend family reading events. This grant allows us to grow this work and increase at-home reading opportunities.

Support for language development

Children participate in daily conversations, storytelling, and vocabulary-building activities. Bilingual materials and staff help support strong communication and language skills.

Vision screening and early detection

Each enrolled child receives an annual vision screening to help identify any issues that could affect learning. When concerns are found, families are notified and supported in accessing follow-up care.

This investment helps ADVOCAP continue providing strong early learning experiences for children in rural communities. We thank the Oshkosh Area Community Foundation and the Otto Bremer Trust for their support of our Head Start program.
